Creation of
Employment zones

The Royal Docks development will seek to target a wide range of employment sectors. This will be broken down into three zones:

Western employment zone - Focus on independent secondary industry workshops employing local people

Central employment zone - Focus on tertiary employment, commercial and office units

Education zone - Focus on quaternary economy, education/R&D

Growing Newham's economy

Newham has a far higher amount of people in elementary occupations. This involves working in the secondary employment sector, usually doing routine tasks to manufacture products.

To grow Newham and the cities economy, we need to build on the strengths of the manufacturing industry in the Western Employment Zone.

The Education Zone will aid people to achieve the qualifications needed to work in higher paid jobs in the Central Employment Zone with local industry-education coordination.

Building

Building on Strengths and educating the future

Providing the education and apprenticeships needed to get Newham to work. The continuation of use as a major employment hub for London will uplift employment and education standards in Newham.

Targeted intervention

Western employment zone - Construction of independent workshops to boost the manufacturing industry.

Central employment zone - Commercial units on the ground floors to bring in consumers to the site. Upper floors to be office space to provide a cheaper alternative to Canary Wharf.

Education zone - Boost the existing university and college by adding a large primary school and a public library to ease pressure on services from the influx of people.

Rebranding the Dock's image

Whilst respecting the rich heritage assets the Docks has, the area must be rebranded to a 21st century 'waterfront city'.

Changing perspectives

The Docks have the potential to be the competition to Canary Wharf. With changed mindsets about the site, the docks can become a major European employment hub.

Once the docks reach their potential, the site will be seen as a vibrant, lively place full of activity and activations. The existing heritage buildings will give the residents of Newham pride about their area.

The creation of employment units will bring in commuters who will have a high quality experience of the docks giving Newham a positive place perspective.
